The entertainment world is mourning today as Eric Dane, best known as “McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy, has passed away at the age of 53. His death comes just 10 months after he courageously went public with his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Dane passed on Thursday, February 19, surrounded by his wife, his two daughters Billie and Georgia, and close friends. In a statement, the family shared:
"With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, who were the center of his world."
He revealed his ALS diagnosis in an exclusive interview with People magazine in April 2025. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells controlling voluntary muscles, leading to weakness, paralysis, and eventually respiratory failure. Though the disease has no cure, Dane’s openness turned his personal fight into a public mission.
Rather than stepping away, he became a passionate ALS awareness advocate, using his platform to raise funds, share his journey, and push for research. In interviews, including one with ABC’s Diane Sawyer, he spoke candidly about the shock of the diagnosis and his determination to “move the needle forward” for others facing the same battle.
Dane rose to fame as Dr. Mark Sloan on ABC’s long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, joining in Season 2 (2006) and quickly becoming a fan favorite for his charm, wit, and emotional depth. He later earned critical praise for his role as Cal Jacobs, the troubled father on HBO’s Euphoria, and appeared in films including X-Men: The Last Stand, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque.
Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane’s career spanned more than two decades, but it’s his warmth, humor, and resilience that fans will remember most. Tributes have poured in from co-stars, friends, and admirers, honoring his grace in the face of unimaginable challenges.
Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria communities. Eric Dane’s legacy—as an actor, husband, father, and advocate—will live on far beyond his 53 years.
Rest in peace, Eric. Thank you for the laughter, the stories, and the hope you shared with the world. 💔
