January 3, 2026 — Tensions across the Americas are boiling over after President Donald Trump delivered a blistering response to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who condemned the U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro.
“The cartels are running Mexico. She’s not running Mexico — the CARTELS are running Mexico.”
He revealed that he has repeatedly offered U.S. assistance to help Mexico dismantle its powerful drug cartels, offers he says Sheinbaum has consistently rejected. “Something’s going to have to be done with Mexico,” Trump warned.
The clash comes just days after a dramatic nighttime U.S. special forces raid in Caracas, which Trump hailed as a “brilliant” operation that captured Maduro and his wife without a single U.S. casualty.
Sheinbaum swiftly denounced the raid, calling it a violation of international law and citing the UN Charter, while urging respect for national sovereignty.
Trump, however, made clear the operation was about far more than Venezuela. He framed the takedown as part of his broader war on narco-terrorism — one that puts Mexico’s most notorious cartels, including Sinaloa and CJNG, squarely in his crosshairs.
Maduro, long accused by U.S. authorities of leading the so-called Cartel de los Soles, is now facing narco-terrorism charges in New York.
Trump’s blunt remarks signal mounting pressure on Mexico amid the fentanyl crisis and escalating cartel violence — raising the stakes for U.S.–Mexico relations.
