At least nine people were confirmed dead after the UPS aircraft went down shortly after takeoff, crashing near airport grounds and bursting into flames. The plane, reportedly carrying cargo bound for Dallas, went off radar moments before impact.

Governor Beshear, visibly emotional during the press conference, said the crash site’s proximity to populated neighborhoods made the situation extremely dangerous. “We are heartbroken by the loss of life,” Beshear said. “But I want to make clear — this tragedy could have been much worse. The plane came down just short of residential areas and a major roadway. Had it crashed only a few hundred yards farther, we could be talking about dozens more casualties.”

Emergency crews worked through the afternoon and evening to extinguish the fire and recover remains from the wreckage. Officials praised first responders for their quick action, which prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby homes and businesses.

Beshear also confirmed that both state and federal agencies, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are investigating the cause of the crash. “Our priority right now is to support the families of the victims and ensure a full, transparent investigation,” he said.

UPS released a statement expressing “deep sorrow” for the loss of its team members and promised full cooperation with authorities.

The governor ended his remarks by commending the community’s response: “Louisville came together today in a moment of heartbreak. We grieve, but we also give thanks that this tragedy didn’t claim even more lives.”

Authorities have asked residents to avoid the area as recovery and cleanup efforts continue.
